Technology - Pain or Gain - $64 Question

Technology is exciting…. Technology is invigorating….Technologists are geeks!

Technology always makes interesting conversation. But are such tidbits sufficient to run a BLOG? Like everything else in life there needs to be a real purpose…

Goals & Objectives: Our primary objective of this blog is to create connectivity amongst people who seek answers to questions on technology fearlessly. Eventually we would network people with a need with those that have solutions. And in doing so would have deployed and created value via the use of a technology tool – the BLOG!

Just as much as birth and death go hand-in-hand, do bear in mind that today’s technology could (often will) be tomorrow’s nuisance. The ‘tick-tock’ of a clock, the old familiar rings of a telephone, the Bakelite records, the vinyl LPs, the analog tape, the eight track cassette, (to name a few) …where are they now?

In achieving this network amongst techies it is important to note there really are no heroes. The author is not about to declare he is a know all either. As a matter of fact he confesses ‘he doesn’t’. Go ahead poll the techies. They will confess that true technologists’ rarely do. What separates the good from the bad? Boundary definition. They are extremely aware of their knowledge limitations. However, one thing separates them from fools - their burning desire to find answers! True techies will never lay low!

The mind is bombarded with so many thoughts and questions. What is technology anyway? Does anyone really care for technology? What is the birthplace for technology? Technologies – do they ever die? Or do they morph themselves into other things, also known as evolutionary? Do people get carried away by technology? Does technology sell? Do people really buy technology? Would technology fetch a premium? Why do people confuse technology with standards?

This past Sunday, GVK called me in the morning and inquired if WiFi was apt for Mysore? Let me save the discussion that followed immediately to be interjected later (when?, just patiently wait!). This is a good question.

When is technology a solution? This is not a trick question. The answer to a large extent is – a technology is a solution only when there is a demand for it. In any case, more will follow later.

In the interim let's address the $64 question: We will begin to ponder on articulating technology. What is technology success? This ought to enable us focus on the opportunity for R&D in this global economy.

  • SR,

You have raised valid questions which hold good ever since when man / woman started asking these questions millions of years ago. Technology, could be a product, more likely a process neverending. It has its good use and 'bad' abuse, both hold good.Like evolution itself, technogy too is continuously evolving, used, discarded, rediscovered all depending on the necessity at that point of time. Man/ woman who innovate and create technolgy can be masters of the same and in some sense, can even becme slaves to it! Very thought provoking question which have myriad answers.

Would like to know and learn more from your blog. Thanks.

  • The analogy that 'today's technology is tomorrow's nuisance', is true only to a limited extent. Without the technology existing today, the other innovations would not have evolved. The biggest event in technology till today is the advent of harnessing fire by the primitive man. The next big thing is the wheel. These things are relevant even today. The examples of eight track tape or the vinyl records can only termed as fore-runners of today's DVD. Even the advent of 'tubes' and transistors are in a way distantly related to the nanotechnology, in which Mr. Rao is actively associated. Therefore the old technologies need not be termed as a pain in the neck. It can be compared to our old parents, who are not useful and productive, but still whom we Indians respect. That is it.

  • The blog is quite interesting, in that the author mentions about the irrelevance of yesterday's products. As rightly brought out by Mr Murhty, today's technological advancement would not have been possible if there was no yesterday's technology. It is like the non existence of today without the passage of yesterday. I can bet, you sell a product that is hundred years old and you get several thousand/million times more in return than what you would get for something produced today that is much more advanced. Think of Wright Brother's invention of the aircraft. Do you call it irrelevant? Hence, yesterday's products which are the forerunners of today's products are relevant for ever.

  • Technology, a gain or a pain? Well, one of our management teachers came up to me the other day and said he couldn't, and wouldn't, take the scheduled class that day, because "there is no power".
I said he could open the windows to allow enough (natural) light inside the classroom and take the session. He said, "No, no; I cannot work the LCD, because there's no power. All my material for the session is in a .ppt file. Without power, I cannot use it; I'm cancelling the class." And, he did!
A man with over a decade of teaching experience turned instantly powerless, because of power failure!
Is the technology to blame? The kind and the extent of dependency we develop on technology may be a more fruitful area to reflect on.

  • Answer to gain and pain is: both are true (but, in their own context).

There is always Good, Bad and Ugly face of technology. I am using the title of another blog [http://kolaap.com/archives/2005/01/11] to convey my message. And, So is true with the worldview of technology (including its processes, products, services, etc.).

But, then there is a middle path: While it is human to think of the dehumanization that technology brings in, it is also human to constantly try to bring in a balance amidst the two, as in evidenced today. We know that artificial intelligence is still a big talk in many areas, nothing so near as was supposedly to replace the capacities and capabilities of human mind. Technocratis are all the more reconsidering using human interface, rather than sole machine face. Knowledge management, as field, has ample evidence to show the dependency on human knowledge and how best this could be shared using both human and technological interfaces.

IT is nuisance, sometimes: At least, one instance, I can personally quote. Libraries have spend public money while changing, &/or "adapting" to new technological interaces, and this issue is a big problem for third world countries. Each sofware package brings a new formula and a total solution, and the libraries are forced to repeat the comedy of errors every decade. PS. this is a global joke.

Another perspective: In the meanwhile consider the applications side: how techies adapt and how others adapt to a techies brain child. The point I have in mind is librarians like me, are getting to the grips with technology (and whatever it demands), slowly and steadily.

And, techies on the other side are yet to understand the importance of librarians, and the power they have -- "Was Ranganathan a Yahool?" (if you remember this article). I mean both, librarians and techies as professionals are in the same boat and realistically both are together as information providers.

Please, have a look at my webliography: Librarians and Techies – A NEXUS . I would appreciate comments from you and your audience.

Do you see this picture in any other profession (s)?

As a Mysorean, I will be interested to see your view point on WIFI @ Mysore.

  • Pain or gain, regardless of the debate, it is here to stay. I can't see a future without technology.
In my field of aviation, i can say with conviction that technology has made things much easier and simpler and a whole lot safer. I for one, look for Wifi anywhere i go in the World. No more need for physical filing of flight plan (can do one on the net in seconds)and laborious, antiquated weather charts and so on. With the www, I have everything at my finger tips and can download the lates sattelite images before I fly. Technology has made navigation easier and more accurate. The challenge has been to train people to make use of the technology.
I guess I am biased in favour of technolgy because it suits me. Good work on your blog Mr. Rao, I look forward to reading more of your tech talk.

  • Thank you Mr. ER Ramachandran. You have certainly caught my drift. Technology is just an enabler, it is part and parcel of the solution. It answers a need and hence with time we ought to expect more from the technologist.
"Necessity is the mother of invention". This is the driver I believe!

  • S.R. Krishna Murthy,
At the high level I cannot fault you. As a matter of fact we are speaking the same language, but on a different wavelength.
At the tech level an Eight Track product and Vinyl Record are totally different, and that is more than physical. The differences are at the technology level. The Eight Track tape is an endless magnetic medium, whereas the Record is purely a mechanical platform. The content in both may be the same, which I would refer as the intent. The system hardware, and medium are really diverse, accessibility of specific content is that much more difficult on one over the other.

Likewise the semiconductor chips function entirely differently - they are bandgap based. Whereas with the nano technology we encounter quantum effects.
Most just focus on the dimensions' aspect alone (with nano), this provides limited improvements in applications.
One needs to understand the underlying principles to extract the most out of it, and I believe that is what you are also stressing.
There is 'old' in 'GOLD but not the otherway around!

  • Dr. (Lt. Col) Anand,
Could anyone fault with 'Necessity is the Mother of invention'? Have we not learned that 'What is good for the goose is not necessarily good for the gander'?
We accept that change is essential as it is driven by need. However, the techie (the real objective for the blog) is supposed to stay on top of roadmaps of needs and develop or begin to maturate systems that are likely to require infrequent changes for acceptance.
A techie ought to look at everything as a stepping stone to the next. In technology there are evolutionary improvements, and then we see paradigm shifts referred to as disruptive shifts. We will talk about this in one of our future blogs.
